My little man...

So, it feels like Austin has officially wandered out of babydom and into toddlerhood. He's wearing 3T clothes. He can climb, and run...still working on jumping. He no longer goes to sleep just because he's tired...there's WAY too many important things to do....like make his little Jeep climb the couch, ride Rock the dog, crack jokes about two cars on top of each other, spin the wheels on the toy mail truck and remind me of the flashing lights on a real truck.

Some of my favorites I have to write down. It's so true that in the moment you swear it's so cute or funny you'll REALLY never forget *this* one....but then another one comes along you have to remember and the previous one gets the boot!

He has discovered he is a *little* man. He's identified that he and Daddy and Papa and Jonny are all in the "man" category. He somehow made the connection one evening while exploring himself and he was asking who else had a penis. So now, it's quit an honor and big deal to be a *little* man ::snicker::. Later during this conversation he was playing with one of Pete's errant eyeglass cases and I hear a sudden "eehhhhhh....ehhhhhhh....EHHHHHH." I look over and he has this "help!" look on his face. Upon closer investigation, I find he had managed to snap his wee winkie in the glasses case. Oh, the tough lessons of childhood ::wink:: !

He's practicing being assertive with the dogs and though he runs screaming when he's holding food and Rock is "hunting" him, he is also practicing giving them firm commands like "Go!", "Down", "Back Up (Ba...ba!!)"and of course, "No, no, no!" He balances this with plenty of snuggles for the dogs and even goes in for Lily kisses......with an open mouth....::eyeroll:: gross!

He's such a sweet kid. He helps take things to the trash, he won't finish eating until his hands and face are wiped free of any new oatmeal mess when he's practicing with his fork. He and Pete share their "special drink" at night and Austin snuggles into Pete and they "chink...and then we drink." This is followed an hour later by many trips to the potty ::snicker::.

He busts out with memories from months ago that astound me when they surface. We were eating breakfast the other day when he looked thoughtful and told me that Austin and Mommy went on an airplane. Daddy was on his motorcycle. Then he looks perplexed and signs "boat" with kind of a questioning look on his face. I ask if he's talking about a boat and he says no and signs it again. I ask if he's talking about the RV and he instantly pumps his little hand Yes! He told me about playing with Cayley. He told me about the Razr (super 4-wheeler). I asked him if he wanted to see pictures and he did, so I got out some pictures from the trip and he went through the whole thing. It was amazing though because HE instigated the conversation...something we haven't talked about in over a month and it's been 3 months since we were there. I always wonder what part of memory goes where/when. Most people don't have memories of when they are this little, but he is certainly retaining his current memory. At about 13 months Dad came over with some real orange juice and Austin LOVED it. At 17 months he had OJ again at Dad's house in the back yard. The second Austin tasted it, his eyes lit up and he said, "Papa!" NUTS!

Okay...I'll have to ponder more thoughts later. Love this kid! Hope I'm a good toddler mom too!! ::fingers crossed:: !!

Going to the lake

These shots are two from our friend Desiree. It's fun to have a photographer around other than me so I can be in some of the shots too! And I've got to pick her brain about her editing...the blue-only-shirt thing is pretty cool.

Here is her site if you'd like to see more:

Such a boy....

Regardless of how many opportunities Austin has to play with dolls and such, he is totally enamored with all things engine-related. He does play with Jeff, his Waldorf doll, but only to pretend to plunge boogers from his nose. I will say his gentle and loving streak is a mile wide, and it is accompanied by a complete fascination for things with wheels. So, here we are, playing with diggers. We seek out construction sites for Austin to go check stuff out. This one is by Sam's, a regular stop with Papa Ross, and we've watched the building go from dirt to beautiful and done over the last few months. We'll sure miss the diggers and the mud we've had so much fun with.

Upsidedown baby....

We were at Bordine's where I was shooting a couple of flower pictures and Pete and Austin were playing on the complimentary playground (genious). Austin discovered the joy of leaning waaaaay back while swinging with Pete. It was funny to watch Pete's face trying the swing out...it's not everyday a 6'3" big guy swings and Pete wasn't too excited about the idea of the swing chains popping off....they held though ;)

Secret Agent Man...

We were playing at Paint Creek Park in the playground shaped like a pirate ship. I caught Austin peeking through one of the holes in the ship at me and snapped some shots. He needs some Mission Impossibly music in the background, no?

Why boys have Dads....

This is why boys are lucky to have Dads. I've pushed Austin all around the yard in that dump truck but Pete tears off into the yard with him and never has to stop 15 times to reposition the direction or move sticks out of the way ;)

A new drinkin' buddy

Pete came home from Alaska and Austin has been soaking up the Dad-time like a champ. Now, when Dad has a "special drink" in the evening he also has to make one for Austin. They'll sit on the couch together and cheers and then drink simultaneously. Austin LOOOOVES being Dad's drinkin' buddy (not alcoholic...in case I had to clarify :D)....and then he has to pee like a racehorse for the next hour.... he he...

A moment...

There is something interesting that happens after you spend a solid 16 months totally dedicated and consumed by this tiny being for whom you are everything. You have been their source of nourishment, attachment, entertainment, security and they have been the source of your life completely changing. You can't wash the dishes, feed the dogs or pee by yourself, and you get used to it. It becomes the norm to plan your day around naptimes and nutrition, around little games and discoveries that your role is to be there supporting their major epiphany that THIS wheel spins TOO!

Then one day you turn around and look and there he is...playing by himself...without any prompting, assistance or interpretation from you. Your sound effects aren't needed to make the moment interesting. Your imagination is unnecessary to bring something to life. While this sounds so "Duh....congrats there Socrates..." it's actually such an introspective moment in time. It's a moment when you're suddenly not needed, and it's awesome and curious at the same time...

...and then 60 seconds later it's over and your skills in wheel-spinning are requested and "reality" returns...

It's amazing how each step and moment prepares you for the coming ones. If pregnancy only lasted a month or if toddlerhood lasted a few weeks it would be quite a different experience. So for now, I'm content to interpret tiny hands and a small (or loud) voice....to be the chase vehicle for adventures on the rolling dragon....to be the 23.5/7....because soon enough this moment will pass too....and we'll be onto the next important discovery...

I got it, I GOT it....

We went with Nana to Wilcott Mills Farms, a working farm with chickens, huge horses, cows, barn cats, etc. Austin diligently pushed ALL the buttons on this tractor....

GQ

Mae Stecker Park is a local place you can go and let the ducks feed out of your hand. I was able to snap this shot and sent it to Pete when he was in AK....it's Austin's modeling-for-LLBean shot :)

Just like you Mom :)

Dad and Austin and I went to Bordine's Nursery to take pictures and play. While there we stopped to discover the hat display. Austin thought I looked hilarious in my had and had to try on for himself.
