Ham
Austin taking a ride in his dump truck. It was a sunny cool fall day and SO fun to go play in our big backyard, cleaning up getting ready for winter while it's still pretty!
Pete and I are finally really feeling nested in the house. I'll have to take some new pictures of the new(est) arrangement. For those of you who know our chronic furniture rearranging habit, this should come as no great surprise...he he....but the new layout rocks!
Ooh, Fall is here!
I love living in MI where we get all four seasons. That was something I forgot about living in Alaska that fall can last for longer than 1 week. I had no idea different maples lost their leaves at different times, or some dry up and drop off and some cover the ground in this soft, lush carpet of gold. It lasts long enough here that you really feel geared up and excited for winter to come. Well, snow maybe....I'm not particularly jazzed about the wind, but, whatever.
It was brought to my attention that I forget to include much else besides my Austin musings here so I'm going to try and include more. I've considered this sort of his pseudo-baby-book which is I guess why I've focused so wholly on that. Plus, being with him all day is awesome and it means that my world is totally focused and revolving around his milestones, discoveries, etc which I enjoy. So, I'll try and be more inclusive in "family" updates :)
Pete's been working at the Detroit Pub as their Kitchen Guru for about a month now I think? He was hired to be the Kitchen Manager at their new location going up soon and we're all excited about that. In the mean time, we were fortunate that they had a vacancy at their downtown location shortly after Pete was hired but waiting for the new one to open (ack!) so he's been commuting downtown everyday...almost 60 miles round trip! Although now that I think about it, that was my commute from Moose Pass to Seward, but the scenery was quite different :) At any rate, he's looking forward to and anxiously awaiting the official opening. With so many job layoffs in the Detroit area we're both grateful he has a job with potential exciting possibilities of expansion.
We're leaving on Friday to fly to WY for my cousin, Ray's, wedding. It's exciting because we'll get to see all of Dad's family and it's the first family "reunion" my immediate family has ever had (Jus and fam are flying in from Louisiana) away from either house. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone again on Dad's side too. We didn't have much contact growing up and it's nice to be able to touch base periodically. Pete stopped by Grandma's house for a green smoothie on his way to Utah this summer. He sent me to spend some time with Grandma and Grandpa several years ago which was awesome.
Oh, Austin is waking up. Hope to post more later.

My little man...
So, it feels like Austin has officially wandered out of babydom and into toddlerhood. He's wearing 3T clothes. He can climb, and run...still working on jumping. He no longer goes to sleep just because he's tired...there's WAY too many important things to do....like make his little Jeep climb the couch, ride Rock the dog, crack jokes about two cars on top of each other, spin the wheels on the toy mail truck and remind me of the flashing lights on a real truck.
Some of my favorites I have to write down. It's so true that in the moment you swear it's so cute or funny you'll REALLY never forget *this* one....but then another one comes along you have to remember and the previous one gets the boot!
He has discovered he is a *little* man. He's identified that he and Daddy and Papa and Jonny are all in the "man" category. He somehow made the connection one evening while exploring himself and he was asking who else had a penis. So now, it's quit an honor and big deal to be a *little* man ::snicker::. Later during this conversation he was playing with one of Pete's errant eyeglass cases and I hear a sudden "eehhhhhh....ehhhhhhh....EHHHHHH." I look over and he has this "help!" look on his face. Upon closer investigation, I find he had managed to snap his wee winkie in the glasses case. Oh, the tough lessons of childhood ::wink:: !
He's practicing being assertive with the dogs and though he runs screaming when he's holding food and Rock is "hunting" him, he is also practicing giving them firm commands like "Go!", "Down", "Back Up (Ba...ba!!)"and of course, "No, no, no!" He balances this with plenty of snuggles for the dogs and even goes in for Lily kisses......with an open mouth....::eyeroll:: gross!
He's such a sweet kid. He helps take things to the trash, he won't finish eating until his hands and face are wiped free of any new oatmeal mess when he's practicing with his fork. He and Pete share their "special drink" at night and Austin snuggles into Pete and they "chink...and then we drink." This is followed an hour later by many trips to the potty ::snicker::.
He busts out with memories from months ago that astound me when they surface. We were eating breakfast the other day when he looked thoughtful and told me that Austin and Mommy went on an airplane. Daddy was on his motorcycle. Then he looks perplexed and signs "boat" with kind of a questioning look on his face. I ask if he's talking about a boat and he says no and signs it again. I ask if he's talking about the RV and he instantly pumps his little hand Yes! He told me about playing with Cayley. He told me about the Razr (super 4-wheeler). I asked him if he wanted to see pictures and he did, so I got out some pictures from the trip and he went through the whole thing. It was amazing though because HE instigated the conversation...something we haven't talked about in over a month and it's been 3 months since we were there. I always wonder what part of memory goes where/when. Most people don't have memories of when they are this little, but he is certainly retaining his current memory. At about 13 months Dad came over with some real orange juice and Austin LOVED it. At 17 months he had OJ again at Dad's house in the back yard. The second Austin tasted it, his eyes lit up and he said, "Papa!" NUTS!
Okay...I'll have to ponder more thoughts later. Love this kid! Hope I'm a good toddler mom too!! ::fingers crossed:: !!

Going to the lake
These shots are two from our friend Desiree. It's fun to have a photographer around other than me so I can be in some of the shots too! And I've got to pick her brain about her editing...the blue-only-shirt thing is pretty cool.
Here is her site if you'd like to see more:

Such a boy....
Regardless of how many opportunities Austin has to play with dolls and such, he is totally enamored with all things engine-related. He does play with Jeff, his Waldorf doll, but only to pretend to plunge boogers from his nose. I will say his gentle and loving streak is a mile wide, and it is accompanied by a complete fascination for things with wheels. So, here we are, playing with diggers. We seek out construction sites for Austin to go check stuff out. This one is by Sam's, a regular stop with Papa Ross, and we've watched the building go from dirt to beautiful and done over the last few months. We'll sure miss the diggers and the mud we've had so much fun with.
Upsidedown baby....
We were at Bordine's where I was shooting a couple of flower pictures and Pete and Austin were playing on the complimentary playground (genious). Austin discovered the joy of leaning waaaaay back while swinging with Pete. It was funny to watch Pete's face trying the swing out...it's not everyday a 6'3" big guy swings and Pete wasn't too excited about the idea of the swing chains popping off....they held though ;)
Secret Agent Man...
Why boys have Dads....
A new drinkin' buddy
Pete came home from Alaska and Austin has been soaking up the Dad-time like a champ. Now, when Dad has a "special drink" in the evening he also has to make one for Austin. They'll sit on the couch together and cheers and then drink simultaneously. Austin LOOOOVES being Dad's drinkin' buddy (not alcoholic...in case I had to clarify :D)....and then he has to pee like a racehorse for the next hour.... he he...
A moment...
There is something interesting that happens after you spend a solid 16 months totally dedicated and consumed by this tiny being for whom you are everything. You have been their source of nourishment, attachment, entertainment, security and they have been the source of your life completely changing. You can't wash the dishes, feed the dogs or pee by yourself, and you get used to it. It becomes the norm to plan your day around naptimes and nutrition, around little games and discoveries that your role is to be there supporting their major epiphany that THIS wheel spins TOO!
Then one day you turn around and look and there he is...playing by himself...without any prompting, assistance or interpretation from you. Your sound effects aren't needed to make the moment interesting. Your imagination is unnecessary to bring something to life. While this sounds so "Duh....congrats there Socrates..." it's actually such an introspective moment in time. It's a moment when you're suddenly not needed, and it's awesome and curious at the same time...
...and then 60 seconds later it's over and your skills in wheel-spinning are requested and "reality" returns...
It's amazing how each step and moment prepares you for the coming ones. If pregnancy only lasted a month or if toddlerhood lasted a few weeks it would be quite a different experience. So for now, I'm content to interpret tiny hands and a small (or loud) voice....to be the chase vehicle for adventures on the rolling dragon....to be the 23.5/7....because soon enough this moment will pass too....and we'll be onto the next important discovery...

Moments with my Haley
I've got to say I'm in love with my Haley-bird. Haley is my brother Jus and his wife Tori's daughter. For almost five years I've been so on the fringes and haven't known her, and Austin and I were able to go with Mom on her annual migration to their house in Louisiana and spend a week with them. I brought my Ergo (what she's riding in), some playsilks, some racing ducks, and Nana brought us and streamers and more. Finally seeing these pictures brings tears to my eyes. Being able to connect with her was very special to me, and it was so incredible to be able to connect in the carrier. It was effortless and stressless....instant and so complete. Feeling my brother's big girl smiling and closing her eyes with her head resting on my back feeling the flutter of a silk in the sunshine dancing to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (or something) is in my memory forever. Watching her swing with every silk tied onto her and the swing flutter back and forth and throw her head back and laugh is snapped in my memory forever.
Austin is waking up so I'll have to post more pictures and stories later, but I wanted to get these on.

Beaking
When Austin is very focused and intent on something, he "beaks"....his little upper lip purses out and resembles a little beak. It cracks us up because periodically we see other people "beaking"....like the guy doing rippies outside the smoker's outlet intently waiting to see if he won the million...beaking....
Pete's 40th Birthday!
It was a fun time. Pete turned 40 this year! We schemed behind his back and Katie came up as a surprise. It was strategery getting her here as she was delayed numerous times and ended up arriving a day and a half later than expected. Pete and I got back from garage-saling and Pete was debating where to put a framed photo we'd found for $2 and I suggested above the couch (where Katie was sitting, matching the couch in a teal shirt no less). Pete glanced at it and looked at the picture....it took several seconds to get the double take, but he was GENUINELY surprised....not something that happens very often! It was the best visit EVER and we all got to celebrate at Mom and Dad's. Pete's gift was a genuine surprise too....
